Overview
Dying Light is a first-person action-survival-horror franchise developed by Techland. Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the Infected, the series combines parkour-based exploration, intense combat, survival mechanics, and a distinctive day-and-night cycle that changes how players navigate the world and face its dangers.
The franchise currently includes three main games:
- Dying Light — the original game, which introduces Kyle Crane and the quarantined city of Harran.
- Dying Light 2: Stay Human — set years later in Villedor and following the story of Aiden Caldwell.
- Dying Light: The Beast — a standalone adventure that brings Kyle Crane back as its protagonist.
The series also includes major expansions and additional content, such as Dying Light: The Following and Dying Light 2: Stay Human: Bloody Ties. Each title expands the franchise with new stories, locations, characters, and gameplay systems, while remaining part of the same evolving universe.
The Dying Light games are developed and published by Techland, a Polish video game studio primarily based in Wrocław.

Yes. Dying Light, Dying Light 2: Stay Human, and Dying Light: The Beast are set in the same universe and share a connected timeline shaped by the outbreak and its lasting consequences.
Each game takes place in a different location and period, exploring a different stage of humanity’s struggle against the infection. Dying Light follows Kyle Crane during the outbreak in Harran. Set years later, Dying Light 2: Stay Human follows Aiden Caldwell in Villedor, a world transformed by the infection and the collapse of civilization. Dying Light: The Beast brings Kyle Crane back as its protagonist and continues story threads connected to the earlier games.
You can start with any of the main Dying Light games, as each one tells a complete story and can be enjoyed on its own. However, playing them in the recommended order provides additional context about the world, its history, and returning characters:
- Dying Light
- Dying Light: The Following
- Dying Light 2: Stay Human
- Dying Light: The Beast
This order is especially helpful before playing Dying Light: The Beast, which continues Kyle Crane’s story. However, previous games are not required, and newcomers can begin their journey in Harran, Villedor, or Castor Woods.
Games, Expansions & Editions
Dying Light: The Following is a major story expansion for the original Dying Light. It continues Kyle Crane’s story after the events in Harran and takes him to a vast countryside region beyond the city.
The expansion introduces a new open-world area, drivable buggies, new missions, characters, and gameplay mechanics. It expands the story of the original game and provides important context for Kyle Crane’s journey.
For the recommended story order, play Dying Light: The Following after the original Dying Light and before Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
Yes. Dying Light: The Beast is a standalone game, so you don’t need to own or play the previous Dying Light games to enjoy it.
The game tells its own complete story and introduces a new setting, Castor Woods. However, it continues Kyle Crane’s journey and includes connections to the wider Dying Light universe, so playing the earlier games can provide additional context for its characters and story.
Dying Light: The Beast takes place after the events of both Dying Light and Dying Light 2: Stay Human. The game continues Kyle Crane’s story, following the next chapter of his journey after the events of the original game. It also explores new events and developments within the evolving Dying Light universe, while building on the wider story established in the previous titles.

World and Infection
The Dying Light universe is set in a world transformed by a viral outbreak that turns people into aggressive, dangerous creatures known as the Infected. As civilization collapses, survivors struggle to find safety, secure resources, and build new communities among the ruins of the old world.
The series follows different characters and communities as they face the ongoing consequences of the infection. Alongside the threat of the Infected, players must also deal with rival survivors, difficult choices, and the challenges of rebuilding society in a world where danger can change dramatically after nightfall.
The Dying Light universe follows the spread and evolution of the infection, as well as humanity’s struggle to survive its consequences:
- The Harran outbreak — The original Harran Virus spreads through the city of Harran, which is placed under quarantine. Dying Light follows Kyle Crane as he becomes involved in the conflict between the city’s survivors and the Infected.
- The events of Dying Light: The Following — Kyle Crane’s story continues beyond Harran in the countryside surrounding the city, where he investigates a new threat connected to the infection.
- The Fall — After the original outbreak, the virus evolves into a more dangerous form known as THV. Its spread leads to a global pandemic and the collapse of modern civilization.
- The events of Dying Light 2: Stay Human — Set years after the Fall, the game follows Aiden Caldwell in Villedor, one of the last major surviving cities, as humanity struggles to rebuild and survive.
- The events of Dying Light: The Beast — Taking place after Dying Light 2: Stay Human, the game continues Kyle Crane’s story and explores new events in the evolving Dying Light universe.
Although the games are connected through a shared timeline, each main title tells a self-contained story and can be enjoyed on its own.
The outbreak was caused by a highly contagious virus that triggers a violent transformation in its victims, turning them into the Infected. It first spread through the city of Harran, prompting the authorities to place the area under quarantine in an attempt to contain it.
Despite these efforts, the virus eventually spread beyond Harran and contributed to the collapse of civilization. Over time, the infection evolved into different strains, creating new threats and shaping the world seen in later Dying Light games.
The Harran Virus is a highly contagious pathogen responsible for the outbreak in Harran. It transforms infected people into aggressive creatures and can cause different symptoms and stages of infection depending on the individual and the progression of the disease.
The outbreak led to Harran being placed under quarantine and triggered a global crisis. As the virus spread and evolved, it contributed to the collapse of civilization and shaped the dangerous world seen throughout the Dying Light series. Its continued development also led to new variants and increasingly severe threats.
THV, or the Tachytransmissive Harran Virus, is a more infectious and dangerous variant of the original Harran Virus. It was created as a result of GRE research and later escaped from a GRE laboratory, triggering a new pandemic.
Like the original virus, THV affects the nervous system, spreads through bites and contact with infected blood or saliva, and causes infected people to undergo increasingly severe stages of physical and mental deterioration. However, THV spreads more rapidly and causes more severe mutations.
After the original Harran Virus outbreak, the GRE continued researching the virus in secret despite promising to close its laboratories. The emergence of THV led to the Fall, an event that caused the collapse of civilization and shaped the world seen in later Dying Light games.
The Fall was the global catastrophe caused by the spread of the Tachytransmissive Harran Virus, or THV. After escaping from a GRE laboratory, the virus spread rapidly across the world, infecting populations and overwhelming efforts to contain it.
The resulting pandemic led to the collapse of governments, infrastructure, and modern society. The Fall transformed the world into the post-apocalyptic setting seen in Dying Light 2: Stay Human and Dying Light: The Beast, where scattered survivors struggle to rebuild and survive.
Main Characters
The main protagonists of the Dying Light games are:
- Kyle Crane — the protagonist of Dying Light and Dying Light: The Beast. In the original game, he is a former soldier who becomes an undercover GRE operative sent to Harran during the outbreak. Dying Light: The Beast continues his story in the region of Castor Woods.
- Aiden Caldwell — the protagonist of Dying Light 2: Stay Human. He is a Pilgrim searching for his missing sister, Mia, while becoming involved in the conflicts shaping Villedor.
Together, their stories form an important part of the wider Dying Light universe, with each character facing a different chapter of humanity’s struggle against the Infected.
Kyle Crane is one of the main protagonists of the Dying Light series.
He first appears in the original Dying Light as a former soldier turned undercover GRE operative recruited to carry out a covert mission in the quarantined city of Harran. As the outbreak unfolds, Crane becomes deeply involved in the fate of the city and its survivors.
In Dying Light: The Beast, Kyle returns as the protagonist. After enduring years of hardship and dangerous experimentation, he travels to Castor Woods to confront the people responsible for his suffering while struggling to control the changes taking place within him.
Kyle’s story connects the original game with Dying Light: The Beast, making him one of the central figures in the wider Dying Light universe.
Aiden Caldwell is the protagonist of Dying Light 2: Stay Human. He is a Pilgrim who travels between the scattered settlements of the post-apocalyptic world in search of his missing sister, Mia.
His journey leads him to Villedor, one of the last major cities inhabited by survivors. As Aiden becomes involved in the city’s conflicts, his decisions influence the people around him, the balance of power between its factions, and the future of Villedor.
Kyle Crane and Aiden Caldwell are protagonists from different chapters of the Dying Light universe. Kyle’s story begins during the outbreak in Harran and continues in Dying Light: The Beast, while Aiden’s story takes place years later in Villedor, before the events of the latest main installment.
Although they follow separate journeys and come from different backgrounds, both characters are shaped by the lasting consequences of the outbreak. Their stories explore different periods, locations, and aspects of humanity’s struggle to survive in the Dying Light universe.
